About the Spotlight: Every day I spend a fair bit of time surfing various galleries and sites around the internet. Each Sunday I will pick the miniature that impressed me the most that week (there's always one) and highlite it here. Sometimes it will be by an unknown, sometimes it will be by the pro artists. I will also give a little blurb about why that particular miniature is my favorite for the week.

Goblin Gas Blower
Koradhil and I seem to be attracted to painting the same or similar mini at the same time - both have great taste I guess! :) This is a really characterful mini and I picked up this blister pack just yesterday to add to the little Goblin force I'm putting together. Koradhil has taken a really neat approach with the mini - the blends are really smooth and the colors are warm and rich. I think I'll be doing mine in a more "green/drab" tone, but nevertheless huge props to K for this great piece of work! |

Champion of Nurgle Conversion
| Thomas created the figure that was probably my favorite in the entire "Fantasy Miniatures" book recently released by GW: the mounted Chaos Champion. That figure also happens to be in this week's top 10 last 7 days on CMON. But this one really took me by surprise - what fantastic work! I'm already a nurgle fan as it is, but Thomas really went to town converting and painting this guy. The face on the chest has such a great feeling of depth to it, and the facial conversion on the emp'champion helmet is wonderfully seamless. Thomas does some amazing stuff with putty and paint! |

Menoth Paladin of the Order of the Wall
| Gotta love Mrs. McVey. She cranks out brilliant pieces for Privateer Press very rapidly, that are of good enough quality to hit my weekly fave section already (witness the Widowmaker captain from a while back). And when she "takes her time" she blows us away with work like this - I love the alternating patterns on the shield and cloak, and I am so happy we have an artist out there turning out masterworks like this using *metallic* paints (gotta give a nod to Joe Hill and Jakob Nielsen in that regard, too). This figure is extremely cool, and Ali has really done it justice. I don't normally do this, but the figure image is linked to her auction for the piece - if I could afford to buy other people's work, I'd be tempted to buy this one. |

Orc Animist on Brontops
| Very, very cool. Several things stand out on this beauty by Tony: The flesh, for one thing. Blue orc and deep, dark blue (indigo almost?) brontops. Way out of the norm in terms of colors yet totally effective. And how about the metallic work on this guy? THAT is what I'm talking about with the metallicAdept contest: Tony has taken a totally new approach to using metallic paint and it works beautifully (ie mixing the metallics with normal colors). Would this be "legit" in the contest? Yes. As long as metallic paint is "involved", it's ok. And how about that copper verdigris look on the horns? ahem.....Bitchin'. |

Cryx Reaper
| I love how Todd does Cryx. This is not his first - he's got a whole little army brewing in this beautiful rusty NMM style. The color scheme, while not adhering to the "official" black colors of Cryx, just feels "right". It's so clean, the lines are so crisp, and the metal is so well done. Wish I could do this! Also makes me eye the pile of assembled Cryx models I've had on my desk for months! |

Countesse de Brionne
| Well, good Lord. This is just insane. Sascha makes yet another appearance on the weeklyfave page, and this entry is so amazing it could melt your eyeballs. LOOK at the freehand! The checker pattern alone (keeping it so neat!) would fry my brain trying to do. Yet Sascha has incorporated it with overlaid heraldric symbols. Not to mention, this is a killer conversion! "Goatman" truly operates on a whole other level than most of us - each of his miniatures is a work of art. |

Drune Persecutor
Never even occurred to me to put the Drunes in a snow-themed setting, but this is so excellent I just might copy the idea. Would be even more suitable for the Formor Fiends because they are almost Yeti-like in appearance. This is a great little job, I especially like the fur cloak on him, and the snow/frost look on the cloak as well. |

Nurgle Marine
Nice, very nice. Cyril-esque almost, in terms of the color choices and smooth blending. I love nurgle, and this is a fine example of the nurgle style. I like how Allan has used a different shade on one leg, and the "sick" effects, like pustules and veins, are very well done. Great job on this guy! |

Widowmaker
Ack. Love this. Love the model, love the paintjob, love the base. It has a very character-ful look to the whole presentation. The face is especially dramatic. Notice how it is just rosy enough to suggest a colder climate, yet not so rosy as to look like a wimpy girl. She definitely looks dangerous. This is so cool (a word I use too often on this page) that I plan to buy the Widowmaker box and do a unit of them for ebay, so stay tuned for that (they haven't quite made it to Edmonton yet). "Fluffy" is, I think, the legendary Mike McVey's wife. IF NOT, I apologize for the gaffe :) In any case, great work here. |

Space Wolf Lord Odin
Very, very cool. This barely looks like a GW product anymore, and almost has a Rackham dramatic style to it. Love the flowing beard, the "wizened" look, and my favorite part by far is the fur draped over his leg/knee area. Nice metallic work as well! Two thumbs up. |

Priestess of the Jade Scythe
Despite a lot of competition this week (for example, from Matt V's 500 dollar gorgeous mounted elf), the miniature that blew my socks off was hands-down this beauty by Glyn Evans. This is his entry for a "Survivor"-like contest called Last Painter Standing (hope I got that right). Although some parts of the mini are simply "really good" (hair, skin tones) it is the jade effect that hits you like a ton of bricks. The jade totem statue on top of the staff has such an amazing illusion of lustre and depth. This is just groundbreaking work for Glyn in my opinion, and I doubt I could have pulled this off myself. Wow. Hats off to this week's favorite! Glyn's site used to have some problems for me in terms of connections and timeouts, but now it seems to be up and humming along, and has been added to the links page (the Miniature Painters Guild). Well worth a look.

Dwarven Thermo-Warrior
I know, some of you were thinking "that lazy s.o.b. already stopped updating his weekly fave!" But in truth I just wasn't saying "wow" those past couple of weeks. This week Johnny KS wow'ed everyone on CMON with an onslaught of converted female inquisitor models. Beautiful work, and all strong contenders this week, but none that were honestly my favorite this week. Rather, the wicked little guy above is my favorite this week :) Love the work on this guy: clean lines, bright colors, nice blends, dig the little "rackham-esque" swirl on the sword that I am so far failing to emulate. Also, NMM bronze/copper is quite difficult to do and Zach has done a great job of it here. Two thumbs up. Zach's site is also being added to the links page.

Tyrant of Val-Tis

For the second week in a row my favorite miniature is by Sascha aka Goatman - and again, the picture is not available right now because probably someone has "reported" his image as too large on CMON. What a pain - get a cablemodem!

Inquisitor Valdesz
My favorite mini this week is a sweet Inquisitor Coteaz conversion from CMON. The artist's moniker on CMON is "goatman". His real name is Sascha Buczek. He does some amazing work so I suggest checking out his gallery there. The reason I love this particular mini is the really cool yet simple conversion work, the excellent SENMM (sky-earth NMM) work, and the subtle yet effective freehand on the cloak. Great job!

Dragan D'Orianthe
Well, here's Mayne's second appearance on the weekly favorites page already, and it's only a handful of weeks since I started this feature! But if you look at the smooth blends, wonderful color choices, flesh tones and the NMM gold fillagree, I think you can see why I chose this piece for this week. The patience it would take to do such awesome work on the gold lines is probably beyond me :) Great work once again, Mayne.

Demigod of Mars
I was immediately taken with this miniature when I spotted it on Matt's personal website before it was even posted on CMON. The pose is obviously quite dynamic, and the flesh is nice - as well as the plume. But really what got to me the most was the brilliant work on the NMM gold armor. It's absolutely awesome. And this mini will be on Matt's Painting Guide CD-ROM. Reckon I will have to pick one up to learn this technique!

Ultramarine Survivor
This week it was quite hard to choose my favorite and to be honest, the two top contenders were both by this artist from (France?) Europe: Cyril! Wish I knew his whole name to give proper credit. The other figure I almost chose was his Daemonhunter Hierophant. As for this figure, the Ultramarine Survivor - what I love about it is: a) the concept b) the fleshtones are *amazing* c) this is a very vanilla plastic figure, turned into a total work of art. I can't keep saying "artist X is becoming my favorite painter" all the time - but suffice it to say I'm in awe of Cyril's talent. No big surprise that he was a Rackham painter!

Abaddon The Despoiler
My favorite mini for this week is Abaddon the Despoiler by Mayne Thiele. Mayne, who runs a site in the links section (Dragon Miniatures) has done a fantastic job here. The piece is dynamic, the color choices are excellent, the NMM is phenomenal, and the base work compliments the mini beautifully. Look at the blends on this guy, especially the purple areas. Beautiful. Excellent work Mayne!
