Salamanders Space Marine Captain

I had a ton of fun doing this one, and honestly he's my favorite entry out of all 4, despite being the most problematic.

The conversion on this involves the following additions to a basic plastic marine:

- flames - sculpted from putty. I am super proud of these - they are my favorite part of the mini and turned out *exactly* as I pictured.

- scale tabard and cloak made from Malus Darkblade's cloak.

- Dragon icon on belt buckle and power fist, made from Dark Elf plastic shield icons.

- Dragon/salamander skull in base made from Warmaster Chaos Dragon head.

- 2 Black Coach fire pots

The base is putty and real rocks, sand, gravel etc.  A thick wire goes up through the base to build it around. The figure actually can stand up on the normal small round base - the bigger one was added to make sure he doesn't get knocked over at the contest.

The lava pouring out of the rock is just a depression in the putty, filled with Woodland Scenics Water Effects and painted appropriately.

I had a heart stopper just this week. I was casually flipping through an old White Dwarf and notice the dragon shoulder pad in a picture (I couldn't remember seeing it before).  It was listed as an ALPHA LEGION CHAOS shoulder pad. (That's what it is).

ACK.

I actually had no idea that's what it was. I emailed a bitz order to GW Canadian Mail Order and asked for Salamanders shoulder pads (2). And they sent these, but I didn't know they were originally for Alpha Legion. I think it still works, but the judges might fry me for it. It's not my fault, I swear!

Rear shot. You can sorta see the flame honor marking on the shoulder here. I suck at freehanding images, so it was a little scary trying to paint the icon after the figure was pretty much done.  But it actually turned out wonderfully (imho).  The scales.....I like the scales, but some folks that have seen them find them too drab. Ah well :)

I should note that this entire figure, even the metal plate in his head and the color scheme, is based on the Salamanders article in the White Dwarf with last year's Baltimore GD coverage in it (the one with the Demon Prince on the cover - I don't have it handy to put what number it was.  I often read White Dwarf's (over, and over again) in bed before going to sleep - and that's when most of my ideas come to me.
